I can only hope someday (and maybe 50 pounds lighter) I am that good! Right now I just take an aerobic belly dance class for the exercise, but it's fun and it's the only exercise I've really stuck with for any amount of time. Plus, the wealth of crafty goodness that is the costumes.... :D

I need to master the basic shimmy. :( I can do a twisting shimmy just fine, but can't get a vibration or side-to-side shimmy to save my life.

Keep your knees soft, and chest lifted, pelvic bones tucked in. Keep your hips relaxed.

Bend and straighten your legs, alternating. Do it slow at first and speed up. Everything below your ribcage should be jiggling. If it's not, you're doing it wrong. ;)

I also recommend the Jillina belly dance DVDs==she's amazing and has solid Egyptian cabaret technique.

I think the 'keeping your hips relaxed' part is my problem. That much jiggling sets up a harmonic vibration big enough that I might hurt someone! O.o

Done right, you can't hurt yourself with belly dance.

A good way to think about the "disconnect" between your upper and lower body is to try doing an omi--a circle you draw with your hips. Imagine you have on a belt with metal on it, and someone is dragging a giant magnet around you in a circle, so your hips follow. Once you get a sense of how to keep one body part distinctly still from the other, it'll be easier to learn belly dance.

And there are over 100 shimmies. ;)

Go see if you can find a proper belly dance class in your community. The BD fitness aerobic approach isn't really belly dance. It's like what tae bo is to actual karate. A good instructor can show you how to break down the moves, step by step.

Good luck!

When I visited her in NY, [livejournal.com profile] iremos gave me belly dancing lessons before we went to see a live performance. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
